  • Open your box and bag and inspect the tubers. If not planting right away, store your tubers in a cool, dry place and monitor them for moisture until you are ready to plant. Make sure to leave the bag open so the tuber can breathe.

  • After inspecting your tubers, please contact us within 2 weeks for anything needs to be addressed for a refund or replacement tuber. If you receive the wrong variety of tuber, please notify us by Oct 1 with a picture. We will refund the full amount paid per tuber.

  • Dahlias like warm, well-draining, rich soil. The plants can be damaged by freezing temperatures, so plant your tubers after all danger of frost has passed.

Dig your hole 4-6” inches deep. Lay the tuber on its side with the eye side up. Put a little slow-release fertilizer in the hole, cover, and wait. You should see sprouts within a couple of weeks.

You will need to watch the moisture level of the dirt. If too wet, they rot. Generally, your dahlias will sprout if your gardening soil has good moisture. Once the plant is 4-6 inches tall, you can start a regular watering schedule.

  • Dahlias like to be watered deeply and regularly once they are growing. Here in the West, I water 2 up to 3 times a week depending on the temperature.

You may also stake the plant to grow straighter stems.

Once your small plant is 9-12 inches tall or has 5-6 leaf sets, you can pinch out the center stem to help it branch more. Snip the plant above the second set of leaves.

When weeding, you’ll need to pull out weeds by hand. Do not spray herbicide on your dahlias.

  • Harvesting in the early morning hours when the plant is most hydrated helps to promote a longer vase-life for your flowers.

Once cut, immediately put the stems in water and place in a cool part of your home. Change water daily. Blooms should last 4-6 days.

You can also start to harvest tubers after your first killing frost. Start by cutting plants back to six inches above ground. Remove the clump using a fork or shovel but be gentle to avoid damaging the tuber.

  • Before your plants die, check all labels to make sure they are correctly marked. Once frost has killed your plants, cut the stocks off and let them sit for a week or two. Dig tubers with a broad fork and bring them up to about 6 inches above ground. We knock off the extra dirt and store the tubers in peat moss in bulb crates.

Dahlia will turn to mush if the tubers freeze or shrivel if kept too warm. Store tubers between 40-45 degrees at 65-75% humidity. Monitor monthly to address if the tubers need more moisture or need to be aired out.

Dahlia Tubers

All of our tubers will be healthy, single tubers, have at least one viable eye, and be true to variety. Tubers vary in size and shape. In the rare instance that a tuber has no eye or was mislabeled, we ask that you email us by Oct 15th with pictures and an explanation of the issue. Variations of colors can occur in Dahlias due to many factors including, soil ph., temperatures, and sun exposure. I have noticed in my own garden that sometimes it takes time for the tuber to show its real colors, (Nicolas, I’m looking at you).

If you receive a tuber that is mismarked or without an eye, we will refund you the cost of the tuber, excluding the cost of shipping.
